Pemba, Mozambique
Spring 2007 Update
Mission Mozambique
In December 2006, David Vanderpool,M.D. traveled for MMDR from Nashville, Tennessee to Pemba, Mozambique. He carried with him the prayers of his
family and friends, and quietly tucked away in two bags, 386 pounds of medical supplies. Through local contacts, Dr. Vanderpool was able to give
medical treatment to over 600 people, and found on this journey exciting opportunities for service for Mobile Medical Disaster Relief.

Why Mozambique?
The need is great! Medical facilities are scarce or nonexistent. Running water and electricity is rarely available. The people live without basic medical needs. In Mozambique, 1 in 6 people have HIV/AIDS. AIDS prevention education could slow the march of this disease. In a country of 20 million people, where 60% of children die before the age of 5, a child can be vaccinated for 8 of the top 10 killer diseases for approximately 5 dollars. The potential impact on a country's future for the price of a cup of premium coffee makes the country of Mozambique a wonderful opportunity for service.
A Field of Opportunity
What the doctor found was not only great need, but also great potential for good works! After 10 days in the region he
found that MMDR could serve the people in Mozambique in several areas of need. What lies ahead is full of promise:
In the region of Pemba, land was dedicated for the site of a new hospital. We have committed to fund the build of this facility, its operations for 3 years, and the provision of medical supplies. Two physicians were secured to run the hospital. Plans were made for a curriculum to educate local women as community health care nurses. Nurses would provide training in disease prevention, clean water initiatives and well baby care. A mobile medical unit was purchased to serve the "bush" and outlying areas. An agricultural education program to aid farmers is in the planning stages. The program will provide basic agricultural knowledge and supplies.
Why We Go
Our ministry springs from a desire to serve God and His Kingdom.
Serving those in medical need is both our calling and our privilege. MMDR exists to help fulfill the medical needs of those in areas of crisis and ongoing need, in Jesus' name.
The New Testament says that we are to live a life of service to the Lord and that whatever we do, we are to "do it all for the glory of God." (1 Corinthians 10:31b)
The apostle Paul said, "For we do not preach ourselves, but Jesus Christ as Lord, and ourselves as your servants for Jesus' sake." (2 Corinthians 4:5)
Land Rover Medical Unit
A Land Rover, similar to the one pictured above has been purchased by MMDR for use as a mobile medical unit in Mozambique. Specially equipped with a stretcher, generator and medical refrigeration, it will serve to carry medicine and medical personnel to areas that would otherwise be without medical attention.
Currently, the medical team in Pemba is spending several weekends a month driving to remote villages to reach the sick. In many cases, the local witch doctor has given the suffering people fetishes, potions or burns in an effort to relieve pain or illness. Our team is able to diagnose and provide proper medical treatment to these patients. In villages where repeated medical visits have been made, we have seen a decreased number of common illnesses!
