In 2006, MMDR began working with a sewing school on the Pemba, Mozambique base of Iris Ministries for the widows in the community. Disregarded as little more than property and abandoned (widowed) without reason, these women were constantly abused and forbidden from any education or occupation. Many of these woman have over 7 children and are forced to survive on less than $1/day.
The sewing school trains these women in a profession, enabling them to make an income off of their products and continuing to support the ladies and their families past graduation with a position in the school's co-op. Now they average $3.50/day and are able to send their kids to school, feed themselves and their families, and have even joined together to live in a guarded community protecting them from thieves and abusers.
The profits from each purse purchased continues the school and is reinvested in the lives of the students and graduates. These handbags bring so much hope to the women of Pemba, Mozambique.

On January 12, 2010 Haiti was rocked by a massive earthquake which left thousands dead and exponentially more injured. Rapidly responding to the disaster, MMDR has been integral in the relief and rehabilitation efforts in Haiti. (Read more about their work here).
Hoping to generate awareness of the need and to support their on going work, MMDR has made a "Bring Hope to Haiti" t-shirt reminding us all to pray, support, and remember those still suffering from the devastating effects of the earthquake and subsequent disasters. Please support MMDR and help Bring Hope to Haiti.
